Tailgating UTSA Football: A San Antonio Game-Day Guide

San Antonio does game day differently. The Alamodome sits downtown rather than out past the loop, so a UTSA Saturday starts in a concrete lot with the skyline over one shoulder and the smell of somebody else's brisket over the other. The tailgate is the event. Kickoff is the part that happens after.

This is our guide to doing it well: when the Roadrunners actually play at home this fall, what the lots allow and forbid, and how to build a bar on a tailgate that still tastes good in the fourth quarter.

When are UTSA's 2026 home games?

UTSA plays six home games at the Alamodome in 2026: UTRGV on September 5, Colorado State on September 26, South Florida on Thursday October 8, Navy on October 17, North Texas on November 14, and Tulsa on the Friday or Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, November 27 or 28. Four of the six are American Conference games, and the season opener against UTRGV finished 45 to 16 in front of 33,403 people.

• ·Saturday, September 5 — UTRGV. Played: UTSA 45, UTRGV 16, the Vaqueros' first game ever against an FBS opponent.
• ·Saturday, September 26 — Colorado State. The nonconference closer, and the last home game before October.
• ·Thursday, October 8 — South Florida. A weeknight conference game, which makes for a shorter, sharper tailgate straight after work.
• ·Saturday, October 17 — Navy. Historically one of the better-traveled visiting crowds on the schedule.
• ·Saturday, November 14 — North Texas. A conference game with real standings weight this late in the year.
• ·Friday, November 27 or Saturday, November 28 — Tulsa. The regular-season finale over Thanksgiving weekend; the exact day was still to be confirmed when the conference released the schedule.

Kickoff times and television windows are usually announced about twelve days out, so the date is the thing to plan around and the hour is the thing to confirm the week of. UTSA posts both on its official athletics site as they are set.

The road games, and which ones are worth the drive

Seven road games fill out the season, and two of them are close enough to be day trips from San Antonio rather than travel weekends.

• ·Saturday, September 12 — at Texas State, San Marcos. Under an hour up I-35, and the closest thing UTSA has to a neighborhood rivalry.
• ·Saturday, September 19 — at Texas, Austin. Ninety minutes north, and the biggest stage on the schedule.
• ·Saturday, October 3 — at Rice, Houston.
• ·Saturday, October 24 — at Tulane, New Orleans. The bye week follows on October 31.
• ·Thursday, November 5 — at Florida Atlantic, Boca Raton.
• ·Saturday, November 21 — at UAB, Birmingham.

What do the Alamodome tailgate lots allow?

Tailgating is allowed in the Alamodome parking lots, and every space used for it needs a permit. Alcohol is limited to guests 21 and over and must follow TABC and City of San Antonio rules, glass containers are prohibited, and charcoal, wood and propane grills are permitted while open flames, ground fires and deep fryers are not. Lots generally open several hours before doors, so a midday kickoff means a morning start.

Two of those rules shape a tailgate bar more than people expect. The first is the glass ban, which quietly rules out the obvious plan of setting a bottle on the tailgate and pouring from it. The second is the permit, which means the guest bringing the drinks and the guest holding the parking pass should be talking to each other on Thursday, not in the entry lane on Saturday.

Policies do get revised between seasons, and specifics like lot opening times move with each kickoff, so confirm the current rules for your game before you load the truck.

How to build a tailgate bar with no glass

Batch the cocktail at home the night before and carry it in a stainless steel growler, an insulated jug or a hard plastic pitcher, which keeps the drink colder than a bottle would and satisfies the no-glass rule at the same time. Bring more ice than seems reasonable, cut the limes before you leave, and pour into stainless or reusable hard plastic cups rather than anything that shatters.

• ·Batch at home, chill overnight. A cocktail that goes into the cooler already cold stays drinkable hours longer than one you mix warm in the lot.
• ·Two coolers, not one. Drinks in one, food in the other. The food cooler gets opened forty times an hour and every opening costs you cold.
• ·Salt the rims before you leave, on a plate you can cover. Doing it in the wind is a losing fight.
• ·Freeze a few limes whole and use them as ice. They chill without watering the drink down, and you can cut them later.
• ·A gallon of water per person, separate from everything else. San Antonio in September does not negotiate.

A batched margarita for the lot

This makes roughly twelve drinks, which is one growler and about right for a tailgate of six who intend to keep standing. Mix it the night before, seal it, and let the cooler do the rest.

• ·24 oz blanco tequila. Mar Azul Silver is built for this: bright, mineral, and still tastable through a lot of lime.
• ·12 oz orange liqueur.
• ·12 oz fresh lime juice, squeezed the same day. Bottled juice tastes like bottled juice, especially warm.
• ·4 oz agave nectar, thinned with an equal splash of warm water so it actually dissolves.
• ·8 oz cold water. Batched cocktails need the dilution that shaking would normally give them.

Pour over ice in the lot, salt on half the rim so people can choose, and squeeze a fresh wedge over the top of each one. That last squeeze is the difference between a batched drink and a drink that tastes like it was made for you.

If the day is hot enough that nobody wants anything sweet, skip the margarita entirely and build ranch water instead: blanco tequila, lime, and Texas mineral water over ice. It is three ingredients, it is endlessly refillable, and it was more or less invented for standing outside in this state.

The tailgate is not the warm-up. It is the four hours you will actually remember, and the game is the excuse that got everyone there.

September heat versus November night games

The first half of the schedule and the second half want different bottles. A September lot at midday sits in the nineties with no shade worth the name, and warmth flattens a heavy pour: that is blanco weather, served long over a great deal of ice, tart and cold and mineral.

By the Thanksgiving-weekend finale, the sun is down before kickoff and the lot is cold enough for jackets. That is when reposado earns its keep, poured neat into a steel cup or stretched with nothing more than lime and a little soda. Six months in American white oak gives it soft vanilla and smoked cinnamon, which is exactly what a cold parking lot in late November calls for.

Getting there, and getting home

The Alamodome's downtown location is its best feature and its trickiest one. Traffic on the east side of downtown knots up well before kickoff and stays knotted for an hour after the final whistle, which is a good argument for arriving early and an even better one for not being the person who has to drive out of it.

Settle the ride home before the first pour, not after the fourth quarter. Name the designated driver while everyone is sober enough for it to be a real decision, or plan on a rideshare and leave the truck in the lot overnight. Every drink in this guide is for guests 21 and over, and none of them are worth a drive you should not be making.
