Blended, Not Infused: How Sabores Gets Its Flavor
Ask what makes a flavored tequila worth taking seriously and the answer is in one word choice: blended, not infused. An infusion steeps something in finished spirit and hopes for the best. A blend is built: real tequila and natural ingredients brought together deliberately, tasted, and adjusted until neither one shouts over the other.
What is the difference between blended and infused tequila?
Blended and infused tequila differ in method. An infusion steeps an ingredient in already finished spirit and takes whatever flavor comes out of the steeping, while a blend combines tequila and a prepared flavor component in a measured proportion that is tasted and adjusted until the two are balanced. Blending gives the producer control over the final ratio; infusing leaves more of it to time and chance.
What is flavored tequila?
Flavored tequila is tequila that carries the character of an added ingredient, such as coconut, coffee, chocolate, or chili pepper. The base is tequila made from blue Weber agave, and the flavor can be introduced either by blending a prepared ingredient into the spirit or by infusing the ingredient in the finished spirit.
How does Mar Azul make its Sabores expressions?
Mar Azul builds each Sabores expression by blending 100% blue Weber agave tequila with a real natural ingredient, rather than infusing that ingredient into the spirit after distillation. Every blend is sweetened only with agave nectar and adjusted by taste so that neither the agave nor the flavor overwhelms the other.
Every Sabores expression starts as true 100% blue Weber agave tequila. Our Habanero is Reposado tequila blended with habanero pepper: rested oak underneath, slow fruit-forward heat on top. The Coconut that took Double Gold at the European World Spirits Competition is silver agave blended with toasted coconut, sweetened only with agave nectar.
- ·Natural ingredients, never artificial flavoring
- ·Sweetened only with agave nectar
- ·A true tequila base in every bottle
What flavors does Mar Azul Sabores come in?
Mar Azul Sabores includes eight expressions: Coconut, Coffee, Chocolate, Mint, Pomegranate, Banana, Almond, and Habanero. They sit alongside the three Reserva expressions, Silver, Reposado, and Añejo, which makes eleven Mar Azul expressions in total.
Is flavored tequila artificially flavored?
Some flavored tequilas are made with artificial flavoring and added sugar, and others are made with real ingredients, so the bottle in hand decides the answer. Every Mar Azul Sabores expression is blended with a real natural ingredient and sweetened only with agave nectar, with no artificial flavoring.
How should you drink flavored tequila?
Flavored tequila can be poured neat, served chilled, or used in cocktails in place of a sweet liqueur. Because a blended expression already carries its own sweetness, cocktails built on it usually need less added syrup than the same drink made with an unflavored tequila.
The result is a glass that tastes composed rather than flavored: perfect neat, chilled, or in the cocktails our Mixologist builds around them.
Common questions
- Has Mar Azul Coconut won any awards?
- Mar Azul Coconut won Double Gold at the European World Spirits Competition. It is a silver agave tequila blended with toasted coconut and sweetened only with agave nectar.
- How spicy is Mar Azul Habanero?
- Mar Azul Habanero is Reposado tequila blended with natural habanero pepper, so the heat arrives slowly, behind the oak and the fruit, instead of hitting at the front of the sip. It is built to be sipped or mixed rather than treated as a novelty shot.
- Can you make a margarita with flavored tequila?
- Yes. A flavored tequila slots directly into a margarita in place of the blanco, and coconut, pomegranate, and almond expressions are common choices. Cut back on the syrup or orange liqueur, since a blended expression brings its own sweetness to the shaker.
- What is the difference between a flavored tequila and a tequila liqueur?
- A liqueur is a sweetened, flavored spirit, and plenty of agave products are bottled and labeled that way. A flavored tequila keeps tequila as its base spirit, and reading the front label is the reliable way to tell which of the two is in the bottle.
- What does 100% agave mean on a tequila label?
- 100% agave means every fermentable sugar in the tequila came from blue Weber agave. A bottle labeled only "tequila," known as a mixto, may take as little as 51 percent of its sugars from agave, with the remainder from other sources.
- Who makes Mar Azul Tequila?
- Mar Azul is a family-owned tequila brand based in San Antonio, Texas, founded by Susana Sutton. Its eleven expressions are made from 100% blue Weber agave grown in the Jalisco highlands.
